(b. 1978) is a graduate of the Department of Glass Art at the Estonian Academy of Arts (BA 2002, MA 2005). She has taken additional professional courses and been in artist's residences both in Estonia and abroad, including Creative Glass Center of America (USA), the Glass Centre of Sunderland University (UK) and GlazenHuis (Belgium) being among the most prestigious ones.
Besides having held exhibitions in Estonia, Sarapu has also participated in group exhibitions in Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Denmark, Russia, Germany, Turkey, USA. Sarapu's artwork belong to number of public collections: Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design (Tallinn, Estonia); Museum of American Glass (Millville, NJ, USA); Museum of Modern Glass Art (Eskisehir, Turkey).
Her works have won prizes in national art competitions and are presented in several public buildings.
“My inspiration often derives from the elements of nature, native ornaments, motifs and objects in daily life which happen to have meaning because I choose to give it to them. My works constitute a diary of my personal past as the time goes by. It records important moments, happiness, lyrical and glad moods and even sadness.
Personal matters are the most intimate ones. That is the reason for me to focus my creativity to issues, problems and phenomena representing my personal experiences and ideas. Instead of intentionally saying something with my work I often prefer seeing my work to say something to me. I enjoy the unintentional and surprising outcome. I see it as being in a dialogue with material.
My favorite glass forming techniques are the kiln ones, especially thin-layered pâte de verre. And often I use the glass, as fragile and delicate it may be, as a protective shield for something really valuable.”
